Personalized care before, during, and after cataract surgery.
What Are Cataracts?
Cataracts occur when the clear natural lens of your eye becomes cloudy, leading to blurred or dim vision, glare sensitivity, faded colors, or difficulty seeing at night. Cataracts typically develop slowly with age, but can also be accelerated by UV exposure, medications, or other health factors.
Not everyone with cataracts needs surgery right away. At Slabtown Eye Care, we guide you through every step—helping you preserve your vision for as long as possible and ensuring a smooth transition if and when surgery becomes the best option.
Preventing or Slowing Cataract Progression
While cataracts can’t be reversed, certain lifestyle changes can help delay their development or slow their progression.
Wear UV-Protective Sunglasses
Daily sun protection is essential. Choose sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays and filter high-energy visible (HEV) light. Wraparound styles or large lenses offer added coverage—especially during peak hours (10 a.m.–4 p.m.). Even on cloudy days, UV rays can cause damage.
Review Medications with Your Doctor
Many commonly prescribed medications—over 300, in fact—may contribute to cataract progression. If you're on long-term prescriptions, especially steroids or systemic anti-inflammatories, talk with your optometrist and primary care provider to evaluate alternatives.
Avoid Steroid Eye Drops (When Possible)
While steroid drops may be necessary to manage certain inflammatory conditions, they can accelerate cataract formation. We’ll work with you to find safe, effective alternatives when possible.
Quit Smoking
Smoking is a leading modifiable risk factor for cataracts. It increases oxidative stress in the eye and can double or even triple your risk. Quitting now can help slow the progression and protect your long-term eye health.
Eat an Antioxidant-Rich Diet
Nutrition plays a powerful role in eye health. Incorporate foods high in antioxidants—like leafy greens, berries, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, and citrus fruits—as well as omega-3 fatty acids from fish like salmon or sardines. Cutting back on processed carbs and sugars may also lower your risk.
We can help you build a vision-friendly nutrition plan or coordinate care with your primary doctor or nutritionist.
