Contact Lens Exam

A custom fit for clear, comfortable vision.

New to Contacts? We’ve Got You Covered.

If you’ve never worn contact lenses before, we understand—it can feel a little intimidating at first. You’re placing something directly in your eye, after all. But at Slabtown Eye Care, we make the process smooth, personalized, and stress-free.
Whether you’re brand new to contacts or just updating your prescription, your contact lens journey begins with a few simple steps.

Step 1: It All Starts with a Comprehensive Eye Exam
Before we fit you for contacts, we begin with a full evaluation of your eye health and vision. This includes:

  • Review of your medical and vision history
  • Assessment of your eye teaming, focusing, and pupil response
  • Eye pressure testing (to screen for glaucoma)
  • Internal and external eye health evaluation
  • Refraction testing to determine your prescription

This thorough baseline helps us ensure that contacts are safe and effective for your eyes.

Step 2: Let’s Talk Lens Preferences
If you're a good candidate for contact lenses, we’ll talk about your lifestyle and preferences:
  • Want a daily disposable for simplicity?
  • Need extended wear for convenience?
  • Interested in color-enhancing lenses?
  • Over 40 and curious about multifocal lenses?

We’ll explain the pros and cons of each option and help you choose what’s best for your eyes and routine.

Step 3: Precision Eye Measurements
Contact lenses require exact measurements for comfort, stability, and vision clarity. We use:
  • Keratometry – measures the curvature of your cornea (the clear front surface of your eye)
  • Pupil Size Measurement – helps ensure proper lens alignment and vision correction
  • Corneal Topography – creates a detailed map of your corneal surface to detect irregularities and ensure precise contact lens fitting

Topography is especially helpful for patients with astigmatism, keratoconus, or prior eye surgery, and allows us to fit specialty lenses with greater accuracy.

Step 4: Tear Film Evaluation (If Needed)
If you have dry eyes, we may perform a tear film test to see how much natural moisture your eyes produce. This helps us decide if contacts are right for you—or if special moisture-retaining lenses might be a better fit.

Step 5: Trial Lenses + Fitting
We’ll fit you with trial contact lenses based on your measurements and preferences. Once inserted, we check:
  • Lens positioning and movement on your eye
  • Comfort and visual clarity
  • Overall fit and prescription accuracy

If everything looks good, we’ll send you home with your trial lenses so you can test them out in your daily routine.

Step 6: Follow-Up (If Needed)
In many cases, your contact lens prescription can be finalized after your initial fitting. But if you're trying a new lens, switching brands, or wearing contacts for the first time, we may schedule a short follow-up visit.

This check-in allows us to:
  • Confirm long-term comfort and lens stability
  • Make minor prescription tweaks if necessary
  • Ensure your eyes are adjusting well to the lenses

If all is going smoothly, no follow-up is needed—but we’re always here if you have questions or want to make changes later.
