Dry Eye Treatment

Relief starts with the right diagnosis. Comfort starts here.

What Is Dry Eye?
Dry Eye Disease occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough quality tears to keep the surface of the eye properly lubricated. It’s a common and often chronic condition that can significantly affect your quality of life.

Tears aren’t just water. They’re made of a delicate balance of oil, water, and mucus. If any layer is missing or unstable, it can lead to symptoms such as:

  • Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations
  • Blurred or fluctuating vision
  • Eye fatigue or heaviness
  • Redness or excess tearing (as a reflex to dryness)
  • Discomfort when reading, using screens, or wearing contacts

Dry eye can affect individuals of any age, especially with today’s increased use of computers, smartphones, and other digital devices.

At Slabtown Eye Care, we diagnose the root cause of your dry eye and match you with the right treatments to restore comfort and clarity.

Dry Eye Diagnostic Testing
\We don’t guess—we test. During your dry eye evaluation, we use a combination of advanced diagnostic tools to determine what type of dry eye you have and why it’s happening.

Meibography
Meibography allows us to visualize the structure and function of your meibomian glands—the oil-producing glands along your eyelids. These glands are essential to tear stability and comfort, and gland dysfunction is one of the most common causes of dry eye. With high-resolution imaging, we can detect blockages, atrophy, or early dysfunction and build a treatment plan that addresses it directly.

Other testing may include:

  • Tear break-up time to assess tear film stability
  • Ocular surface staining to detect damage or dryness
  • Inflammation markers to evaluate immune-related causes
  • Tear volume and quality measurements

This comprehensive approach ensures we’re treating the underlying problem—not just the symptoms.

Prescription Dry Eye Therapies
For chronic or moderate-to-severe cases, we may recommend one or more of the following:

  • Anti-inflammatory Eye Drops (e.g., Restasis, Xiidra, or short-term corticosteroids) to reduce surface inflammation
  • Oral or topical antibiotics to treat inflammation or meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Tear-stimulating medications like pilocarpine or cevimeline (available in drops, gel, or tablets)
  • Eye Inserts (e.g., Lacrisert) placed daily in the lower eyelid to slowly release lubricating medication
  • Amniotic Contact Lens: For patients with moderate to severe corneal surface damage, an amniotic membrane contact lens can promote healing, reduce inflammation, and regenerate healthy tissue. This temporary, therapeutic lens is placed in-office and worn for several days under close monitoring.

Self-Care & Lifestyle Tips
For mild or occasional symptoms, small adjustments can help:

  • Blink often—especially during screen use or reading
  • Use a humidifier in dry indoor environments
  • Wear wraparound sunglasses outdoors
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day
  • Consider omega-3 supplements (under your doctor’s guidance)
  • Review your current medications for dry eye side effects

Over-the-Counter Relief
Artificial Tears are a good starting point for temporary relief.

  • Low-viscosity drops feel like water and provide quick relief with minimal blur—but may require frequent use

  • High-viscosity gels offer longer relief, ideal for nighttime use, but may temporarily blur your vision
